01 · Chester Avenue · Bakersfield
Cruisin' Chester
Forty years along the strip
In the 1960s and ’70s, cruising Chester was Bakersfield’s Friday-night pulse — a rite of passage that helped inspire George Lucas’s American Graffiti. This isn’t a nostalgia piece or a staged revival. It’s a record of what forty years have done to the strip: the weathered signs, remodeled counters, and drive-in food joints that changed, hung on, or disappeared.
02 · Practice night · Kern County
Bull Riding Practice Night
Eight seconds in the arena dust
Amateur riders come out in the evening to work on a craft that gives nothing back for free. Under the floodlights it’s chute prep, a few violent seconds, and the walk back through the dirt — again and again, trying to get it right.
